Students come to blows in NIT Warangal

Tension grips campus early on Monday
Tension prevailed on the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus here with students coming to blows in the wee hours.
The police escorted away three students to calm down the tense atmosphere on Monday afternoon.
According to chief warden R.L.N.Prasad, some students hailing from Fiji, burst crackers around 3 a.m. at Hostel-1.8.
Disturbed at the sudden burst of crackers one Kshitij Batra, M.Tech. final year student came out and questioned them. Irritated by his questioning, the Fiji students along with another student beat Mr. Batra severely. On information, the chief warden and other officials rushed to the spot.

No one arrested

“We have summoned all the students involved in the brawl. The police came to the campus in the wee hours. In the afternoon, the police came again and took away three students only to calm down agitating students,” he said.
The NIT officials identified three students – two Fijians and one from another country whom they refused to identify to the press persons and said they would take suitable action against them.
Meanwhile, Kazipet Circle Inspector Jabbar said they did not arrest NIT students, as there was no official complaint.

    NIT Warangal hosts Technozion 2012

The 12th edition of the technical festival – Technozion 2012 at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here started off on a colourful note.
Inaugurating the festival, co-founder and CEO of Rang De, N. K. Ramakrishna exhorted the students to develop technologies that are affordable and accessible to a large section of people of the country.
He said that the theme for this edition of Technozion, “Gandhian Engineering” was very close to his heart. “India will be truly successful only when each one of us collectively contributes to its development,” he said urging the budding engineers and innovators, to take up a social enterprise and scale it up to make cheap, feasible outcomes available to the common man.
He appreciated the efforts of Team Technozion and the fantastic environment provided by NIT-W to turn many dreams into reality.
Another guest at the inaugural, Rajeev K. Kurium Thati of ACC Cements, wanted students to be more competitive. “Student innovators should engage in meaningful activity that will yield best results,” he said.
Over 5,000 students representing different technical institutions across the country took part in over 50 competitions during the three-day annual event.

    NIT denies ragging

The National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Warangal said that there had been no incidents of ragging on its campus ever since the new academic year commenced.N V Umamahesh, dean, students' affairs, said the administration and the students' council were taking all precautions to prevent ragging incidents on the campus."We are keeping a close watch to see that these incidents do not recur. It is unfortunate that a news channel had depicted videos of students having a birthday party in their hostel room as a ragging incident," he said. He denied that students had stormed into the administrative block during a recent protest after the videos were aired by the channel, asserted that the protestors were ABVP and Telangana Students' Federation activists. who had no connection with NIT-Warangal.

NIT Warangal ragging video goes viral, college authorities in a bind

    Bum game

A video clipping posted on a social networking site showing some senior students of the prestigious National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NITW) in Andhra Pradesh, indulging in a "bum game" with juniors and subjecting them to physical abuse in the name of ragging , created ripples in the institute on Thursday. The video clipping, which was telecast by a couple of Telugu television channels, showed about four to five senior students surrounding a junior and kicking and spanking him on his butt in the name of the "bum game."There was another clipping as well, showing the seniors disrobing another junior student, tying him with belts and placing clips all over his body.In another clipping, another student was made to blow air into a condom.

Though nobody knows when the incident happened and who the students in the pictures were, inquiries with students in the college revealed that it could be at least a year-old video."We have not come across such a video clipping in the college in the recent past. But such incidents do happen in the campus but are confined to the hostel.Ragging is never done in public," a student of the NITW, refusing to reveal his identity, said.Another senior student said the video clipping could be related to a birthday celebration in the hostel and not necessarily that of ragging."Such funny games are often played in the hostel rooms," he observed.NITW director Prof T Srinivas Rao expressed shock over the incident and said a thorough probe would be conducted into the incident."The so-called bum game is a serious one, though the students might claim it is only for fun.We are banning such games in the campus hereafter. It is very dangerous as anything might happen to the student, if he is hurt in sensitive parts," he said.He said ragging was strictly prohibited in the NIT Warangal campus."There are more than 5,000 students from various parts of the country studying in the campus. And we are maintaining strict vigil over ragging incidents.Still, one or two incidents continue to happen," he said.A few months ago, there were clashes between juniors and seniors in the NIT campus when the juniors refused to dance naked at the instance of seniors. The college authorities intervened and hushed up the matter.
